As a mom who has been homeschooling for over a decade and a half now, there really does seem like there are very few things that I can learn about now that will really change our homeschooling game.
This is, by far, the one that changed it the most.
I struggle with ADHD, and that means the way I walk throughout my day may change based on what my brain is able to focus on. Some days I cannot focus on anything, and some days I can only hyper focus on one task.
Block scheduling has really helped me narrow my focus only on the task at hand during any particular block.
I split my days up into 6 different blocks of time.
From 8:00-10:00 each morning, I know the goal of that block is to have everyone up, ready for the day, and make breakfast. I also like to make sure breakfast is cleaned up during this block as well.
From 10:00-12:00, we focus on school. It is when I do read alouds, work on whole family homeschool things like science, history, Bible, and geography. Once those are done, my kids break apart and do their own work like their language arts and math.
From 12:00-3:00, I work. This is when I set my time aside to write, work on curriculum for my Etsy shop, and film/edit videos for my YouTube channel. I would sit and work on these things for hours and hours most days if I let myself, so confining it to only these three hours has been helpful to keep me focused on these tasks only during these hours. If we have anything outside of home, this is also when I try to schedule those things.
From 3:00-6:00, it is garden work and dinner prep. I also like to do a house pick up here. We usually eat right at the end of this block.
From 6:00-8:00 is family time. This is when we watch movies, play games, or spend time outside. Of course, family time is all throughout the day, but I love to keep this block for fun things. It really does make fun and rest a priority!
From 8:00 until bedtime, it is time to do a final clean, shut the kitchen down for the day, prep for the next morning, and get everyone snuggled into bed.
Obviously, every single day can’t go by this schedule, as hard as I try, but having a general outline really helps us stay on track. It keeps each task confined to a particular time, and it always gives me the ability to not get as distracted when I know I have a lot that needs to get done!
If you also have ADHD, even if you don’t homeschool- I highly suggest giving it a shot!
If you’re interested in trying this new schedule, you can find the printout on my Etsy shop!
