Delicious Chocolate Syrup (with a Secret Ingredient!)

Jump to Recipe

I like to tell my kids that everything either costs time or money. If we have the money, we can simply pay for most anything we want.

A great meal? Order it.

A beautiful piece of furniture? Buy it.

But if we have more time than we do money- a situation we seem to be finding ourselves in more often now- we use that time to create things we would otherwise pick up at a store.

Using some basic pantry staples, this recipe is one we really love.

Chocolate syrup is something we have just always kept. If you’ve seen any of my monthly grocery haul videos through the years, Hershey’s syrup is something I very often include. We get a lot of calcium and protein and vitamins from our morning milk, and some of us (ahem…me…) only like it if it’s chocolate.

So as the economy has been hit in our household some, that $10 per month became far more valuable. So we use our time. And basic ingredients.

The thing that I have found that really makes this chocolate syrup pop is the addition of the instant coffee. It doesn’t taste like coffee at all. It just deepens the rich chocolate notes. Highly suggest not skipping that! (If you don’t have any instant coffee, replace half a cup of water with half a cup of coffee.)

I hope your family enjoys this refrigerator staple as much as we do!

Chocolate Syrup

This chocolate syrup makes the best, richest chocolate milk, and it's great on anything you'd use the name brand chocolate syrup on. It's smooth, not at all watery, and the flavor is a robust chocolate.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 dash salt
  • 1/2 tsp instant coffee
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • To a sauce pan, add water, sugar, cocoa, salt, and instant coffee. Whisk together.
  • On medium heat, heat until boiling.
  • Boil until the mixture reaches 220 degrees. The longer it boils, the thicker it will get. I don't go above 220 so it stays pourable when chilled.
  • Remove from heat and whisk in vanilla.
  • Use immediately for a delicious hot fudge ice cream topping or chill to add to milk or coffee.
